We recently bought a house and my kitchen has sewer gas odor. Under the sink I saw this vent was screwed into an adapter and then slipped into another pipe. Male had threads, female did not. It was loose so I figured gas was escaping from there. I removed the adapter piece and bought another piece with threads to attach to vent and a slip to slide into the piece below. It was a bit loose, but the man at lowes said there wasn't an in between size. I took plumbing adhesive and filled the gap. It's been two days and I still smell sewer gas. What can I do to fix this? And can I just seal it off?

Can you get a picture of how and where it's installed now?
As messed up as that set up sounds I would not be surprized if it was installed wrong as well as plumbed wrong.
My guess is you did not try blowing into it to see if working.

My thought, it could be the vent you are working on that is defective and needs replaced.
I wonder what is under the floor where plumbing connects to.
You know they did not do it right under the cabinet by your post.
Is possible that under the floor is just as bad and have a leak there, is gases drifting up under floor into cabinet.

Our house is built on a slab, so everything should be sound below.

Just so we are clear with what you are working on, it is a air admittance valve (aav)
It is used when you do not have proper venting or access to run a proper vent.
They work with a spring and a rubber gasket and moving parts inside the aav.
Any time you have moving parts, things will wear out.

I would suggest replacing the one you have and see if that works.
I have same thing on my bathroom sink, cost $3.99 the valve I am showing is $50.
My $4 aav works fine.
But is what I would do is replace it and see if smell goes away, it is the most likely culprit.

Thanks! I'll try that and see if that fixes it. Where do you find a $4 one? I have seen them for $25.

Single bay sink? I would consider having someone redo everything under there. I would replace that valve using a fenco connector as it will make any future replacements easier.

Also let me add, I did not install it and plan on replacing it in a soon upcoming bathroom remodel.
I can easily run a proper vent, was just cost and laziness why previous plumber used a aav in this case.

I know in some States and counties, they are not legal. They are still sold, but no inspector would or could pass them.
I am just going to replace when I do the bathroom remodel. And is up to you if you want to do it right.
