For reasons too complicated (and stupid) to explain here, the bottom of this tree was buried in a pile of dirt/soil/rocks for several months, up to about two feet high.

I finally got around to clearing the mess and the damage to the tree is evident.

Not sure, but I think it is an American Elm, about 20 feet tall, about a foot in diameter at the base you see.

The tree is otherwise healthy, with lots of new growth and branches all the way up to the top.

Is there anything I should do to try and help the base of the tree heal?

Thanks.

Some landscapers call that volcano mulching, which looks very pleasing to the eye, but as you mentioned, bad for the tree.

It probably will heal itself on it's own. Leave it alone for now and keep an eye on it. As you mentioned, it's otherwise fine and healthy. Just a suggestion.

@ZZZZZ, looks like your tree is okay.

Some trees take "grade changes" a lot better than others; a few hardly even seem to notice. Others are very sensitive, and show it quickly.

Your act of removing the dirt etc., I think will help a lot. I concur with @jmon, and say just wait and see.

And let us know what happens.
