Ok I have scoured the internet and have not been able to find anything remotely useful. So here it is!

My family and I like in a house built in 1952. We are in Southern Claifornia and have a tight crawl space under the house. its maybe 24" from dirt to the bottom of the 2x6 supports. we have all hard floors and area rugs all over. The sound I want to stop is similar to the sound produced from an upstairs neighbor with heavy feet. No mater how slow and easy you walk people anywhere in the house know someone is walking around. Its not the SMACK of the foot but more like the vibrations from the impact. Any ideas???? I'm trying to make it sound as it it was directly on the concrete.

Thanks!

What you are describing is similar to the same effect that makes a drum work.

There are not many ways to deaden that, unless you want to fill the spaces between the joists underneath with some type of suppression material.

de-nagorg thats exactly what I'm looking for but dont want to use anything that will mold. Its very dirty under there. It wont really get wet but there is the chance of some moisture getting in there.

Senior good idea with the cross braces. I walk around barefoot like a ninja and you can still hear it.

Thanks now hopefully someone will chime in about a magical way to avoid me crawling into that crawl space.

If it is a rental and the upstairs neighbor stomps around like Big Foot, let them know and get them to not stomp around. If they do not like your request and keep doing it, file a grievance against them with your local Rental oversight that works between renters and land lords. If that still does not work, time to go shopping for a place with no neighbors upstairs.

Realtors keep a list of places that they are looking for people to stay in and help maintain and sale ready. Yes you could get the place closed on you and have to relocate last minute. But you are also getting paid to stay there.

Post a picture from under the house.
2 X 6's would be the bare minimum for floor joist in a very short span.
Need to know how far the free span is between support.
If all there is, is the hardwood attached directly to the joist then you also have added issues.
There should have been a vapor barrier on the ground in that crawl space to reduce the chance of mold and fungus damage.
