I am attempting to do a skim coat over our old walls after tearing out some wallpaper. My first coat is cracking as it dries. My guess is it's a combination of putting it on too thick and/or mixing the mud too wet (I don't think it was that wet, but I've read that is a common cause of cracking).

Anyway, what is the best solution? Can I fix it with my second coat by just going over it and filling the cracks? Or should I start over? Will the strength be compromised?

I have done a fair amount of drywall taping and mudding; but this is my first real skim coat job. Sometimes it takes me a little while to find my technique. The tutorials all make it look so easy.

did you take all the glue off the walls from the wall paper?

Yes. Scrubbed, sanded, washed, primed.

Maybe try the paint roller trick for getting a more consistent skim coat on the walls you've already skim coated. :thumbsup:
