Doing bedroom addition in SoCal. We only get rain 2 days a year  but something tells me this still isn't good window installs?? I'm not sure if they are temporarily in (didn't see the guys before they left today, will bring up tomorrow) -- but why put em in temporarily anyway.

1. they installed windows and flashing before house wrap. seems weird. Is that like 100% no-no -- or sometimes done?

2. window flashing is just tacked in - the sticky part is not removed at all anywhere.

3. the side flash (see pic below) doesn't even go around into the sill at all. It just butts up against the outside window flange. Again is this 100% bad work, or normal in SoCal with so little rain.

Seems to me you should just do it all the right way.

Part #2 which I'm guessing is maybe more normal?... again in SoCal??? but on these windows and another one .... they only sheath the studs above & below the windows... what's the purpose?

Part #3 have a Velux skylight they installed. It came with a nice flashing kit from Velux which seems like a good thing. Well they didn't use that at all, still sitting in box. Guess they used their own flashing or whatever, but anyone know if that Velux kit is worth using

I'd probably throw these guys off the site. Why would anyone use window tape without pulling the backing off it, not to mention not being installed properly. The flashing kit that Velux sells to go with their skylights is very easy to use and just about guarantees no leakage afterwards. To have it there and not use it tells me they the workers don't have a clue what they're doing.

pretty much what I'm thinking Mike. I had plans to do windows and skylight install myself since I would take the time to do it right... vs. whatever these guys are doing.. makes no sense to me. thanks

Can you post a bigger picture of that missing sheathing, no close up needed.
What I'm trying to see is what that bottom plate is sitting on, looks like a slab.
Any framer I know would have rough framed the walls, sheathed the whole wall, then cut out the window and door openings.
Covered the whole wall with house wrap, cut out the window and door openings before installing the windows.
Location does not matter when it comes to flashing, water still runs down hill no mater where you live.

Haha.. Thanks Joe. Yeah water runs the same no matter what state you're in!! Yes house/addition is on slab.

The framers seemed like they did pretty good job, but this sheathing is strange to me (then again I'm not a framer) and they did same on these 3 windows and another big window on the side. I assume there's a reason.

But the bad window install, flashing before house wrap is just wrong.

this photo isn't my house -- but seem like where mine's going w this bad install ---

I found an article about the same problem with this photo (installing windows before house wrap... duh!). Anyway I'm either telling them to 1) remove windows and fix or 2) get lost and I'll handle. jeez

Just makes no since to me the way that was done.
That sheathing should have been ran past the slab at least 1", if not water and air will be getting in under the bottom plate.
No way would I have installed the windows without all the sheathing in place and the house rap on.
Bottom plate should have been even with the outside of the slab so the sheathing could run past it.
