I have old NUTONE which has been solid for years. Went to clean it the other day and now it sounds (almost) like a garbage disposal running and is moving very slow at 1/3 speed at best. She's been so so good. A bit rusty but solid, help!

Well if you dont want an exhaust fan running at 1/3 its normal speed or sounding like a disposal you have 2 options:

1. Fix existing fan.

2. Replace existing fan.
In the spirit of cooperation, spin the squirrel cage by hand and see if there is any resistance or disposal-sounding noise. If not there is most likely a motor issue.

no resistance whatsoever. spins freely.
Those units are still available so getting a spare part should not be too hard to find.
Usually a couple of screws and the fan assembly pops right out and has it's own little plug up in there.
Can buy replacements at HD or Lowes, and they're not much.
They are made to be easily replaced.

what exactly should I be "replacing"?
You could try to see if the problem is in the unit or the fan motor. Remove the fan motor and plug it into an extension cord.

The motor and fan usually come as an assembly. You're basically replacing the whole thing except for the enclosure.
You might want to peek up in the attic (if applicable) to make sure there is nothing obstructing the exhaust ductwork while you are at it. I had a massive birds nest in mine recently. Since I was up in the attic already I decide to replace the entire fan while I was at it. The upgrade kit at Lowes was a lower CFM motor and not much less expensive than a new fan.

One more lesson learned - if you do pull off the fan bezel and it has been painted over, be sure to cut the paint edge with a utility knife. I didn't and it pulled the face of the drywall off for a few square inches, so I had to do some patching.

I bought the Nutone replacement kit at HD but the old motor/fan is circular in shape to fit into the enclosure and the new kit has square/rectangular plates to affix the motor onto enclosure unit. in other words, i think this might be the wrong kit? HELP! a square does not fit into a circle...

Most of the time these old fans just need the bearings cleaned and oiled
and away they go again.
Can you dissassemble the motor ?
If you can, remove the motor shaft from the bearings,
clean all the old oil off the shaft and the bearings.
Apply some fresh clean light machine oil.
reassemble and test.

Another possible is capacitor, if that fan has one !
Can you post pics?

You might be able to mount the new motor on the old plate.
But if you don't think so, you should bring the new kit and the old motor and plate back to HD,
also bring the model # of your unit and hopefully they can hook you up with the right thing. If not, just return it and try Lowes.
Have you taken down the old motor/fan assembly yet? Should only be 3-4 screws, and the whole plate comes out with everything on it.
NO ONE here has suggested the obvious:

It sounds like the blower wheel is loose on the shaft.

REPLACE the blower wheel. They are cheap, and readily available.

Here is one link

You should verify the size before ordering.

OK. Here is what I have. NUTONE JA2C394N"

I'd prefer to just buy an entire new motor + cage (attached). any thoughts?

Now that you have the motor / fan assy. out, take it down to DH or Lowes and if they don't have one they can order it for you.

Looks like sears carries it:

at $102.00, it might be time for a whole new unit if it's old and dingy.

Or just google it like I did:

I took the the motor to HD and the guy said they didn't sell them anymore because it was an older model. At this point, I just want to order an entire new motor/wheel assembly all together. Is 0696B000 the number i want to google? that includes BOTH the motor and the fan, correct? and what is the difference between QT100 & QT110?
