What is it? And where can I get one?

This came out of my Jenn Air oven. It is greased up (see oven cleaning post). The bottom quick connect is labeled 'COM.' The two on the side are 'NO' (normally open?). Molded in the plastic case is 'McGill' and on the same side is a 6 (or a 9?) at the end near the NO quick connects. The other side has a 4 at the end near the actuating button. It has two marks made with white ink. One appears to be the remainder of the backwards RU. The other is '1F'.

I need to replace it to make my self-cleaning oven cycle work. According to my usual appliance parts source the part is 'discontinued with no known source'.

Of course, the former owner of the house did not leave me the wiring diagram for the oven (Jenn Air S156).

That is a SPDT microswitch and you can get one from Grainger and maybe even Radio Shack.

P.S.: You can likely adapt any microswitch with the same amp and volt rating to work. It need not necessarily be of the same exact shape.

If it's got grease on it, maybe this switch is rated for a higher temp. than an off the shelf switch from RS?

No idea, just throwing that out there.. but I know the entire oven gets damn hot during self-clean.

BTW: 45 minutes on Google got me a link to a PDF of old Jenn Air wiring diagrams :thumbsup: so now I have one - saved that puppy to my hard drive. (servicematters.com library). So, now I know it is the Door Lock Switch Right Bottom. But no notation re: rating of the switch. The other two switches are labeled (15A 1/2 HP 125-250 VAC) but they only have 'CON' and 'NO'.

Can I assume the McGill is also 15A 125-250 V?

OK, all the high power stuff (elements) are contactor controlled, so no significant current is drawn through that switch. The only current the switch carries is signal current, so probably no more than an amp. In my opinion, a 5+ amp rated switch will do the job.

Might be available at parts select....... enlarge the diagram and it is part 16 I think. I'd call them to verify correct switch. Also I think it is N0 and NC contacts not both normally open.

Stubbie gets 10 points for correctly finding the part. I have been happy with repair clinic.com so I didn't check parts select.

But, there is the unfortunate issue of the fine print.... the part is NLA - as in No Longer Available. :furious:

Any thoughts about what I should grease the latch mechanism with, that is, instead of cooking grease?

Well I didn't see the dreaded NLA.... Grandma never had
self-cleaning...we are so spoiled these days....

This one might work or you can look at several others at graingers by looking at snap action switches.....

Stubs - any guess about Amps and Volts? Or how to find out what mine is? And what I need to replace it with?

I don't see anything that would make me think that a 5 amp microswitch wouldn't suffice or anything bigger.. The only thing is the material the switch is made of...since the application is a cooking appliance I don't know the temperature rating required for the switch. Probably pretty high since this thing must be pretty close to the oven during self-cleaning (very high heat).

So, I looked at some diagrams of microswitches and decided that I might have a simple mechanical problem. Figuring I had nothing to loose I decided to soak the microswitches in a household strength degreaser. I let it soak a while, worked the switch and spring manually, and repeated until no more grease continued to coat the actuating button.

I let them dry overnight. Installed the whole shebang this afternoon and I'll be darned; the whole dangblasted thing works.

Someone would PAY me to do that kind of crap?!? I was just doing it because we can't afford to replace it.
