Yesterday I cut out a hole in my concrete foundation and installed a window in the basement. All went well, but now I need to replace about 9" of stone on the front of the house right above the new window as right now I have the 2x8 header exposed.
I have never done any mason work and I'm a bit confused. The stone on the house now is simply up against the house with about 1" gap in between the stone and osb on the house.. no moisture barrier no nothing!.. Just some metal ties that go into the mortar every foot or so.. is this normal? Either way, can I use mortar mix and extra stones and fill in the gap? do I need a piece of angle iron above the egress window to rest the stones on? Would that work, and is the mortar waterproof then?
