We recently got a house which is about 30 yrs. old.
It has an end of life heater (central heating system with ducts.) which does not work and has no air conditioning. The condition of the ducts is unknown and I am a newbie , actually worse than a newbie LOL :)
We are in Northern California Zip 94545.
The house is 2 levels 1600 sq. ft. Upper level is abt 550 Sq. ft.
I am seeking advice on whether we should replace the 30 yr. old heater with a similar heater and get 2 window air-conditioners. (this will be sufficient for our needs).

OR get a central air and heating unit which will be located on the outside.
I would appreciate what the fellow forum members think would be the best course of action.
I would like to keep this house for the next 10 yrs. I have seen 15000 BTU window airconditioners for $300 each and 2 of those (living room + bedroom) can work for our cooling needs with proper installation.

And maybe a fan. If they don't work you can always go to a central unit later.

There is an Economy of Scale issue with two small A/Cs rather than one large one, but that might be outweighed by the advantages of going the window unit route. You paying 13 cents per kwh? How much for propane, NG, fuel oil?
