An "on demand" water heater is usually mounted under a sink for instant hot water. A tankless water heater provides the entire house with hot water. If you are considering the latter, go for gas, not electric. I have one and it is amazing how my electric bill has dropped and the gas usage is minimal. You only heat water when the faucet is turned on, not while you are sleeping, shopping, or at work.
