Re: Have heard there's a replacement refrigerant for R-22, equipmnt-compatible & chea

There are a few of them, i believe all have a capacity loss, almost if not all of them are blends and have a glide -> different components with different boiling points at a given pressure.

The challenge is that older compressors made for r22 have mineral oil and most HFCs need poe oil.

The drop ins have (a) component(s) that mix(es) with the mineral oil.

An example is MO99/438a.

i don't know about now but you used to be able to buy 30 lb of r22 for $500 off ebay which isn't so bad when older units hold like 6 lb or less.

The problem is a tech may charge you $100 to $200+/lb for r22.

The replacements may be cheaper for the refrigerant but legally if you are going to use them you can’t mix them with the r-22. This means that in order to use the replacement you would have to remove all the remaining r-22, fix the leak, sometimes replace oil, schraders, and possibly metering device then evacuate and finally recharge. At the quantities in most residential systems I just don’t see the cost benefit.
