I picked off the curb from a neighbor moving 12/3.

I want to install a bedroom-bathroom 3 way switch for my house and for my sister's house a ceiling fan with a light using a combination fan/light wall switch. I'd rather use 14/3 because it's easier to use, bend, fish, but I picked this 12/3 off the curb. No reason for me not to use it?

That looks like cord not cable. If it is cord, not useable for your application.

If it is old NM you can use it for switches and receptacles but be careful about light fixtures. Some light fixtures may require use of 90° wire as in NM-B. Old NM is rated 60°.

I checked, NM.

It will be used to install a new 3 way switch in the bedroom running up the wall to the attic and down the other wall to a new 3 way switch.

For the ceiling light fan, will it be a problem, the fan is on top closest to the ceiling, attached to the box, the light will be under the fan and will either be an integrated LED or LED bulbs. There won't be any heat from the bulb to the box since the light is 12"+ from the box.
