has anyone else had heard of this problem?
could someone say hello -im new here and would like to see how this works
Hello.

These are the details I was looking for.

One "hot" leg is out.

1. Reset your main breaker by turning it off, then on

If that doesn't work:

2.Call your power company.

thanks 220/221

i guess a hot leg is probobly the main power to the box
seems like it needs a big draw from a 220 washer / oven to pull power to all the outlets i suspect the main 100 amp breaker out side may be the problem but it may also be a problen in one of the upstairs outlets i would like to know a bout the leg is that outside or inside -?
You have the symptoms of one hot leg (line) being out as stated above. The reason you have receptacles come back on when you turn on the oven is you are backfeeding thru the oven to the non working hot leg.

You need an electrician now.

Focus :) Did you reset the main? It's not the upstairs outlet.

You need an electrician now.
Not yet.

1. Reset your main breaker by turning it off, then on

2.Call your power company.

THEN you might need an electrician. Always call POCO first.

To help you understand, you have two hot legs @1 120 vots each, 240 volts between them. You have a bad connection somewhere in one of them. It could be the wires, the breaker or the internal compnents of the panel like the lugs or bus bar. The "silver" wire is the neutral/ground.

is it dangerous to keep this condition going like this as i am unemployed right now-is an electrician able to fix with out the power shut off -because i am real close to that from not paying billi have another breaker from someplace that i could change out myself if the power was off
definition of out

i would like to clarify out meaning nonfuntional -or-disconnected because this after noon its gone out a few times for just a second or two then resume -just long enough to shut down the computor -out as in one leg out
Did you:

1. Reset your main breaker by turning it off, then on?

2. Call your power company.?

Communication is not your strong point huh? I see yet another post.

You're just messing with me aren't you?:jester:

Don't try to understand the circuitry. Just call the power company now. It's FREE and they will guide you.

irregular function of outlets

220/21 (and others) hit the nail on the head! There seems to be one of the feeders out. And the power that he's getting whenever the oven is on, is due to the "backfeed" or "feedback" of sufficient current to power the outlets. However, the advice given. Namely. To call the POCO (power company) first is not universal. In NYC, for example, where we hail from, the power company (Con Edison) is your last in a series of steps. (not your first option) Only after having ascertained 101% that the fault is in the Poco's wires can you call them. You also have to supply the License# of the Electrician taking responsibility for the diagnosis. Should you erroneously call them (when it is an internal wiring problem, you (the electrician) are liable for the amount of $500.00!!!
