I am installing hardwood floors in my home. The contractor has recommended that on the first floor he use a product called redguard from Home Depot as a moisture barrier over the concrete followed by gluing the hardwood floors. I have searched several websites and have found mixed reviews. On the stairs and upper floors he is planning to glue the hardwood directly over the plywood. I live in southern california where the weather is typically 70 degrees and at it's hottest 80 degrees. I am concerned about this method and what problems I may have in the future with what he is suggesting. Please Help!!!

As I stated in another thread I don't like installing hardwood over slabs. :no: I prefer tile but to each their own. Redguard is fine for sealing the concrete but you still need to check for moisture levels after doing so before the install. You can tape a piece of vapor barrier over the slab after it is sealed (do so in several areas to be safe) and monitor for a couple of days. If you don't see any condensation build up under the plastic you are ready to proceed.

As far as the rest of the floor install along as the flooring is allowed to acclimate for 72 hours (You have to remove the plastic from the cartons), and installed with a 1/4" gap around the perimeter you should not have any problems. Make sure they roll the floor with a 100# roller to set it evenly in the glue.

Glued floors are very much more prone to failure and issues than other types of hardwood installation. Maybe get quotes from other contractors, of ask for a detailed explanation of why he is choosing glue as his method?

I agree with fastfloors about the glue, however I have seen flooring products that call for particular glues for installation per manufacturer installation instructions. I assume that is the case here as well but you should verify that.

You should also get at least 3 quotes and go with the one in the middle. Don't compare apples and oranges make sure all three are for the same thing and that everything is in writing.
