I am getting different marks on the hardwood from what appears to be the stapler. Yet nothing is evident on the plate. This is 2 different marks from 2 different times, but location as to the floor is approximately the same. What could be causing this?

Is the flooring 3/4" or 5/8"? If it's 5/8s you need to shim the plate. Maybe the nailer is skipping..just a thought
It is 3/4" hardwood. The first time I used it, I made sure there were no burrs or anything else on the plate and had about 1/16" long marks at the front of the tongue side. Then when I replaced them, there were small dents at exactly 3 1/2" from the front of the boards. Before starting, I placed painters tape on the plate. When checking my nailer ( approx. every 4-5 boards ) there were no marks on the tape. I had done 650 sq. ft. of hardwood since then and not a single mark. I had a professional installer use my nailer on another job, and was told the nailer was working fine. He had no marks. I also had him come to the site and have a look for himself as to what was going on. He informed me that the job had been done correctly and that the nailer had been used properly. He said if it had not been used properly, there would be swirl marks at every staple.
