Hi;
I have a couple small hardwood floor boards that are split and have sagged. The affected area isn't more than 1ft square.
I know nothing about repair of flooring, except that hardwood floors are installed over a plywood "sub-floor". So, if the hardwood is sagging, then the sub-floor must be broken as well.

An idea for an easy fix came to me. What if I place a piece of galvanized steel over the broken floor area, securing it to stable hardwood floor with screws.
How thick should this galvanized steel be in order to support the weight of someone's foot?

If this doesn't work, then I suppose its time to call a pro. Anyone have any idea of how extensive the repair could be?

Thanks

Hi FW,

If you have replacement strips it's not that big a deal to remove and replace a few pieces and maybe not have to refinish the whole floor. Otherwise a pro can do it even if you do not have spares. Whether the floor needs refinishing depends on its condition.

Have no idea since I don't know what needs to be done and even then............

We have no picture's, no idea how old this house is, what caused it to sag.
Older houses where not installed over plywood because it did not exist.
It was just installed over the joist.
Something had to have happened to cause a hardwood flooring to "sag".
Insect infestion, water damage, fungus under the flooring, Ect.
No clue what your talking about with all that steel trying to repair the real issues.

I find it hard to believe that hardwood strips could be laid directly across the joists, but the house is 90 years old. This is a 2nd floor room, so I cannot look at it from underneath, as I can for the 1st floor. I'll have to take a better look at it when I get a chance. I don't think this is something I want to do myself. It's going to be a P-I-T-A, and I don't have much confidence with carpentry, except when its in the attic or basement where it really doesn't matter - I can rip up as much as I want, and fix it whatever way works.
I do not have spare strips of hardwood.
