I am trying to find a place in my basement to store my kayaks. Unfortunately, all the walls are out since they there is something next to each one of them (gas meter/sewer pipe, heaters, washer/dryer/stairwell, closet). However, there are two lally columns in my basement supporting the main beam - these don't sound hollow when I knock on them with a metal object, but they do vibrate a bit when I knock on them with my fist. I have a crazy idea to mount a sturdy piece of wood to the lally column, maybe a 2x8, using U-bolts, and then mount a kayak rack to the 2x8. Something like http://www.amazon.com/Malone-J-Dock...N90M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308492607&sr=8-1 . Basically, create a pseudo-wall surface which would be attached to the column via U-bolts. The additional weight on the column would not exceed 100lb, though the rack/piece of wood would put some shear stress on the column. Now, the column is pretty thick (4" in diameter, I believe)... but is this a good idea? Can attaching something to lally columns possibly be against building codes?

As long as you wrap the connection around the lally column and do not drill holes in it, you will be fine.
