Hello I'm trying to hang some upper cabinets directly in front of a 24" wide hvac duct in the laundry room. With the washer dryer under a countertop underneath them. I don't want to run the studs all the way to the floor as they'll get in the way of the washer dryer sliding all the way in.

I was thinking about a soffit structure but I'm not sure how to ensure its strong enough.

What is the ceiling and that back wall made of? Sheerock over 2x lumber? Unless you are filling the cabinets with dumbells I don't think you need anything more than you would for kitchen cabinets.

Screw them to the wall as you would with regular kitchen cabinets.

Screw the cabinets together into one structure, then you can use studs available. Or put some L brackets under the cabinets.

These photos may illustrate it a little better. Trying to show the duct runs down the wall and across the ceiling.

Attaching the cabinets to each other makes good sense to span the duct, I hadn't thought about that. I think I'll tie it into the washer dryer cabinet to support the weight a bit also.
