Hey, just looking for tips and techniques for hanging a fence gate. It's already built and just need to put hardware. I assume it's fairly straightforward but it never hurts to ask. I'm always open to suggestions and insight. Thanks

Depends on the type of gate. Anytime I had to hang a heavy wood one, I shimmed in in place and installed the hinges. Seems like things always try to move if you don't shim on the sides and block the bottom. I also use three gate hinges instead of two if the gate is really heavy

I usually stack some wood underneath to get the gate at the right height, and shim the sides to try and keep the gap even (thick cardboard works in a pinch), then screw/lag the hinges on

If you just try and have someone hold it in place real quick while you fire in some screws it usually ends up crooked or rubbing somewhere

For one of the more easy ways to level a gate at the desired elevation, you'll need 2 clamps ( I Prefer 2 Quick Grips ) and a couple of pieces of lumber 1x2 or 2x4 or whatever is handy. Extend a piece of lumber , on one side , below the gate about the height you would like the gate off of the dirt and clamp it to the gate. When the gate is leveled with your level, allow the second lumber piece to drop to the dirt and clamp that one. Now JustScrewIt.

This is also how a saw horse can be prevented from rocking on an uneven ( 1 clamp and board required ) surface if that bothers you as it does me if I'm zeroing my rifle.
