I have an outlet checker with a three-light indicator that it telling me that two outlets are "correct," however, when I plug my surge protector into it I'm told that they are not grounded.

Is that weird?
What do you think is up?

Do you have a link on the surge suppressor so we can see what you have there. Generally with two orange lights the circuit has the wiring in the right position.

Im having a hard time uploading any photos.

If it is indeed ungrounded, would a GFCI receptacle fix things?

Without a ground, a GFCI receptacle would give you protection against a ground fault and being electrocuted. But your surge protector would be pretty useless. The surge protector could still provide some protection against line-to-line surges, but could not protect against line-ground or neutral-ground surges.
