Just had a new dryer installed. It wouldn't heat but otherwise it worked. Tech says I have bad wiring. I get 120V on each leg but 0V between the legs. In my old home, I see the ground is on the neutral bar in the panel. Strange thing is that neutral and ground on the dryer are on the same terminal.

Not sure what I need to do. Thanks in advance.

Without seeing pictures of how it was installed and the wiring it's hard to say what is going on there. Does sound like you need a 4 wire receptacle installed.

Your problem is that you only have 120 volts not 220 .you would have to check the breaker and the wire to see where is the problem..something like this happened to me some time ago and it turned out to be a short in the attic but after that short one line would still pass power to both wires

First, try turning the breaker off, then back on.

If that doesn't solve the issue you are either going to have to start checking voltages and splices, or call an electrician.

You do not have 240V. You have 120 on one leg and you passing that leg they the dryer.

Disregard. Fixed it. Sent some pics to an electrician buddy. Ended up having a cheater breaker on the dryer circuit. It wasn't catching both bus bars. Had to move the breaker to the slot above and all is well. I'm drying clothes now!!:)

Yep testing 0 volts between legs was your red flag that both L1 and L2 were on the same leg of the panel.

Sounds like the time my brother in law tried using a tandem breaker for a dryer. I still have no use for the tandem 30 I removed used a tandem 15 to make space for a double 30.
