Have a home built in 75 and it has 1 ground rod. I was told current code is 2 rods. Have several short questions.

Are they just wired in series?
How far apart do they need to be?
Can they be cemented in ( a side driveway is being poured where its currently )?

Thanks

The rods need to be 6 foot or more apart. The top needs to be flush or below grade. You can add a jumper between the rods or come out of the panel to the 2nd rod.

Regardless of code, I prefer to parallel wire them (separate wire to each) so in the off chance one is damaged (lawn mower or shovel is common), your other one is still established. IMO, it is just a bit more redundant than series wiring them.

Thanks guys for the quick responses!

Jim, you mentioned flush or below grade, my current rod is about 6" about grade, Im guessing that has been a code change? Also, with you being a licensed electrician, if these are going under the concrete, should I put in some kind of access point for inspectors for any future work, or it shouldn't be needed? Thanks

Yours is fine below grade. I can't decide about the need for future access.

Our area in NY requires the ground wire to go from the panel to one ground rod, then to the other ground rod, then back to the panel in one continuous wire, no splices allowed.Ground rods can be within footer concrete and are required in NY to be there in new construction. I would not put them below concrete because they need to be in a damp location. If the concrete sheds water it is drier beneath. They should be driven in at a 45 degree angle. I drove mine below grade and covered them up and I put the wire from the penetration into the house to below grade in conduit. It looks nice and neat.

I would love to see this in a wiring diagram
