Kinda under the gun time wise, sorry i searched as much as i can.

Im remodeling my full bath.

The TUB/shower walls will be tiled. Original shower walls were half inch redwood slats then a 1/2" concrete wall then the tile. This has all been removed.

Ive been told to use the "green board" around the tub/shower and then use 1/2" "duraroc" on top of that, then tile.

What do you think?

Green board cannot be used in wet areas, period. The current building code actually prohibits it. Your wonderboard/durock should be applied straight to the studs and subsequently waterproofed with an applied coating such as redguard or a membrane system called Kerdi.

If you need to have two 1/2" thicknesses, use furring strips on the studs.

Also, don't forget to mesh tape and thinset your backerboard's seams and corners to prevent grout/tile cracking.

Is silicone ok ?

I'm doing the same project with a Kohler Shower stall.
Kohler instructions say to use silicone between shower stall and wonderboard. Is it ok to use silicone on all wonderboard seams and them redguard everything ?

No. You MUST thinset and mesh tape the backerboard seams. Otherwise you're guaranteed groutline cracks.

Not sure of the link, but the Tile Council of North America has some pretty good info on their site as I recall.

Basically, backerboard first, direct to the studs, installed with screws or long roofing nails. Then thinset the seams and tape with mesh tape. Then waterproof the backerboard with Redguard or Kerdi...Both work fine and this is absolutely the most critical step. Then tile, using thinset...Preferably from a dry mix opposed to the pre-mixed stuff.

I am extending the tile from around the tub area, to also down the length of one wall - it's ok to have just regular drywall in the area not around the tub, correct?

Typicaly 5x10 bathroom, with the tub across one end - vanity and toilet on the wall where the tile will also be applied.

In wet areas like the tub use backerboard. Otherwise rock is ok. Not ideal but ok.
