Goodman Heat pump troubles

I have a 2008 4T 14 seer Goodman Heat pump. This winter the fan will come on while something else is making a loud humming noise. This noise cycles on and off like something is trying to start. The cycling has longer intervals until whatever it is starts. It could start first time but it might take up to 10 cycles. Any ideas what I should check?

Yep, good chance its your compressor you hear trying to start. You want to take care of this ASAP, so your compressor doesn't become damaged.
