Is it possible to glue down hardwood on vinyl tiles?

I knew that my floor is a concrete slab so I prepare to glue down my hardwood floor on it. When I removed the carpet, I found that there is vinyl tile (small square pieces) before concrete. Can I glue down my floor right over it? Do I still need moisture barrier in this case?

I would not reccomend gluing wood over vinyl tile. There are to many prblems that can arise. One being that the tile have been down for a long time. The glue is probably going to break down in the future. This will cause the floor to start moving and you to have to replace the entire floor to soon.

what type of hardwood? engineered? it will only be as good as the floor under it. what are you gluing it down with? gluing down 3/4 thick hardwood could cause problems. hardwood expands and contracts with the seasons.

Should remove tiles.... if black glue underneath you will have to encapsulate with cement/polymer coating.

You should research that a little further thone. Not all of those flooring adhesives are going to be compatible with prior adhesives or cement/polymer coatings. Whatever they are.

The thing to do is to ask the adhesive supplier this questions and not depend on any BS from an Internet forum in this case.

Thanks all for info. That helps me a lot, I was about to put the floor over it.

I used putty knife to pop one of the tile which is very tight and I can see the concrete. I saw yellow glue, (yay! not the black glue). Is it polyurethane? Is polyurethane cleaner will be effective?

I plan to use MAPEI moisture barrier once I remove all tiles and level the concrete then glue down. Please advise.

BTW: It's 3/8" hardwood and 3" plank.

yellow is good. I wouldn't use a cleaner on it, just scrape it up the best you can and then apply the mapei. You're on the right track.
