I recently spray painted an item with a Rustoleum oil-based enamel flat spray paint. It is the color I wanted, but the sheen (flat) is not. The color is not available in a gloss finish. I tried spray painting it with the Rustoleum clear gloss enamel, but after two sprays, it still seems dull.

Is there a clear high gloss enamel paint I can try? Or, can I try a water-based poly (so that it does not yellow)?

At this point, I need something I can brush on as the item is now in a location that I cannot move to spray. Thanks for your help!

I painted my hubcaps with satin black VHT paint. Then I went over them with the clear coat and it really bumped up the sheen. They came out nice. I don't know if you could do that with a flat paint, though. I feel like maybe you need some shine in the paint itself.

I just read online that perhaps I could use a clear, glossy varnish. Polyacrylic varnish was said to be ok for oil paints. Would this be a possibility? The website also mentioned using wallpaper varnish. Never heard of that, but it is a thinner water-soluble product.

Lowes has Valspar spray cans in different metallic colors and sheens including gloss. Might be worth a look I just used one to paint a old milk can and it worked pretty well.
