A lot depends upon what you are hoping for as a final product/look. Can you give a little more detail?
Generally, a good, 1"+ subfloor can be leveled out well, even over the old adhesives. But the old vinyl or asbestos type tile has to come up since it is too unstable for something like tile to be laid upon.
Having said that, I do a lot of REO work where our tile man often installs right over old vinyl tile if he determines it to be dimensionally stable enough to do so.
I had the tile tested and it came back positive for asbestos
I believe the floor my son has looked at is the T & G kind. I would actually love for him to lay down ceramic tile, but he doesn't care for it.
