Is there such a thing as a cover that one can install on the flue on the home's exterior wall to prevent drafts from coming into the house? Of course, the gas fireplace is not being used.

you should disconnect the gas supply and cap it off according to your local gas code ... depeding on the style of venting you may be able to install a cap on the flue ,,BUT DO MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT GAS SUPPLY TO THE APPLIANCE AND CAP IT OFF PROPERLY you may wanna wrap the the termination with a small plastic tarp or something if it cant be removed

There was a draft of cold air coming through the flue. Unfortunately, the neighbor's wood burning fireplace was fired up also. So, with no wind outside and the soot, there was a slight smell of smoke in the house.

I never use the gas fp anyway, so I used used foam strips to block the external flue, and then sealed with ducting tape.

Surprised, we use our gas log set all the time, nice. They make them vent free if you are interested.

They go into your lungs, are absorbed into the blood stream and are them dumped into the brain, killing off the weaker brain cells and allowing the stronger brain cells to flourish (ie. survival of the fittest, aka Darwinism).

Handy, follow the referenced posts regarding removal and capping of the gas line. I would also like to add 1 more important point when and if you do this. Install a tag at the cap explaining why it's capped, things happen people die, people move, things change it's always best to be sure someone else don't come in and go OH, I think it's cold I will just remove this cap and hook it up and light the fireplace. Then DIE.

I shut off the gas valve several years ago. I've put a piece of blue tape over the switch. I don't foresee myself turning on the gas fireplace unless there's some sort of get together at my house. Otherwise, it'll probably remain off until I sell the house, of which I would have to ready it for use in order to pass inspection.

To HVAC Dude.

Well, I keep my slider cracked open to allow oxygen in so I guess they go up into the atmosphere, turn to acid rain, blow up to Canada and fall on your house. :whistling2:

lol jagans .. hmmmm always wondered where that cloud of acid H2O came from lol .. i checked into the units and it crazy how they allow that to vent into a house at 30,000 btuh . im sure they have guidelines for supply air requiements for buildings , but its def not allowed in the snowy north ,, stricter gas code laws :)

If I shut off the gas supply, how could there be any safety issues?

if any one opens the gas and starts up the stove and the vent is block. possiable carbon monoxide posioning ...
First of all, no one is coming into my house and turning on anything, never mind a gas valve that's behind a cover.

Second of all, I have a piece of tape over the wall switch that indicates the flue is blocked.
