:vs_worry::glasses: We Converted to Propane Heat Dec / 2014 and had a couple extra taps installed should we choose to add on other gas appliances.. Looking at Installing a Gas Fireplace on an Inside Wall.. My Query is , Could / Can We "T" into the existing Exhaust & Vent Pipes leading from the Furnace ??:plain:

No. The furnace pipes are sized for a certain amount of exhaust and you would overload them and if PVC plastic, melt them.

:biggrin2: So that being Said, separate Exhaust & Vent Pipes for each additional Gas Appliance.. Can we Install a Gas Fireplace on an Inside Wall in like manner as the Gas Furnace , running PVC piping to the Outside ??

Need metal pipe.

To make life easier read this Napoleon ( made in Canada and excellent quality ) fireplace manual.

Yo also cannot DIY in Canada ( hookup the gas or take out a permit w/o being a licensed gas fitter or hiring one to do that.) There are clearances to combustibles and ins company concerns and codes to follow so it is not a simple job. Do-able if you follow them and get a gas fitter to do the gas and permit. Ontario has very strict rules so you should check if any DIY is allowed.

Re: Gas Fireplace / Exhaust & Venting..

I also like Napoleon.

Technically, in Ontario, if it's your own house you can do it, but no insurance company would allow it. Sometimes a licensed tech will do the final hookup, but they would have to trust you, which means only friends.

Cheers!

I only let 1 guy use my gas license and he worked 3 feet away from me and was a Journeyman tinbasher. Worked with him as a installer and he did great work and I saw it and could trust him. Nobody else. Too much liabilty.

As much as people complain about California.....I can DIY all of my stuff. As long as I pull the permit.

We have a gas fireplace in our master bedroom. Metal B-Vent all the way up. I would not want to even think about PVC. That is how you kill yourself.

:glasses: @ yuri ... 10-4 Upon Installation of the Propane Furnace they gave us Chapter & Verse about any attempt to hook up any additional gas appliances when they added the extra inline Taps.... If we Install a Gas Fireplace off the Inside Wall, this particular wall is cement block .. The Utility Room off the Furnace Room which the Exhaust & Vent Pipes from the P/F run through is on the otherside of the C/W.. The Furnace Room & Utility Room are the only Unfinished Rooms in the House (Open Ceilings).. Cheers Thanks

Propane can be tricky as you may have to increase the pipe size from the tank, depending on how large it is. Fireplaces can use up to 30,000 BTUs . Neighbor has a Napoleon 30,000 and it can heat the house in a emergency.

I would get some quotes from local installers, at least you know of a good brand.

Vermont Castings is very pricey and like a Lexus but very good quality and they have some of the nicest looking units. Smoked glass etc etc. I see them in the high end millionaire houses in Tuxedo etc.

:glasses: When we set out looking to Replace the previous Oil Furnace to Propane.. We had Discussed with Installer about Future Add On's .. Part of the Installation was Pre Installed Provision for Future Installs.. So I believe were Covered..:wink2: My Concern is more the Exhausting & Venting  @ yuri ..As you stated , We can not "T" into the Existing PVC piping from the Furnace.. It's just a matter of What is Code and Where is the Safest Route.. And if in Fact we can Mount off an Inside Wall..

They can direct vent out a side wall and they can use a chimney. At the end of the day you need a experienced contractor who knows the codes.

If you plan to use it to heat a room and not just occasionally for cosmetics then I would check into getting one with a fan and if they can hook it up to a thermostat and use as a space heater.

I don't know all the local codes etc and just service them. Napoleon you can easily get parts for later unlike some of the who knows who no name brands.
Plus if you buy Cdn you can get a better deal with our weak Loonie.

That's the Deal.. The Heating Duct Work throughout the Basement Vents down through the Ceilings.. It's cooler in the Basement most times unless your sitting / standing directly under a vent...lol.. Dampness is an issue as well which has been addressed.. As you say purely for cosmetic reasons and if Family should congregate in the Basement for a short spell.. :glasses::wink2:

They are not very good combustion efficiency wise and are meant for cosmetics. I doubt you get more than 50-60% efficiency and the rest is out the chimney. No way to make them more efficient.
