Garage Drywalling

Hi there, I am finishing my garage ceiling, and my only concern is that there are no joists on either end of the garage.
The final joists are behind the final point i need to attach drywall.

Can i just Screw 2x4's to the current joists at the end to extend them to hang the drywall from? or do i have to completely build joists?

Also on the end closest to the house, they finished it to the peak of the ceiling, and thus there is drywall attached to a joist sticking 2 inches out, but i cant screw drywall to the drywall, and im concerned if i rip the old 2" strip of drywall out, i will weaken maybe drywall on the other side of the wall? this seems silly now that i type it. What do you guys recommend?

The sheetroock was run all the way up the wall to make it legal by forming a fire break.
Just attach the 2 X 4's like your suggesting.
Going to have to figule out a way to move all those wires first.

yea, i was aware of the firewall regs, i was curious on that end if i could rip the strip of drywall (2") off or just attach like i said, and as for the side with wires, that is no concern to me :D i got that :D

seriously though, i figured "fattening" the boards would work, i just wasnt sure if code or something would get in my way. no one will ever see it i'm sure.
what do you think of cross beams? specifically at the end of each drywall maybe? or is that unneccessary work.
Honestly if it were my place and I had that space I would consider spray foaming the ceiling and calling it good. I would like the extra overhead storage with the joists.
I think you can nail or screw a 2x4 nailer to the gable end and be done----
deal with the wires, then either add a 1/2" or 5/8" strip above the drywall to allow a solid full surface to attach the 2x4 nailer to or cut 2" off the drywall and then add the 2x nailer. adding the 1/2" strip and then the nailer will give a full 1 1/2" for the ceiling drywall to mount to and cutting the 2" off and adding the 2x will only allow 1" for the ceiling drywall to mount to. ceilings are usually hung first so that eliminates the (just having one inch to nail the drywall to) scenario and it is usually a full 1 1/2" to nail to.
