I added some insulation to my wood frame garage door. Needless to say the 1/3rd horsepower opener couldnt cut it any more. I put in a 1/2 hp opener and while it opens just fine now, when it closes it seems like it is slamming closed. It causes the metal track to bow upwards as the door is going down and the whole opener sort of shakes around for a second or two. Is there anyway I can fix this? It appears that with the insulation on the door, it is now too heavy for the opener. Any ideas?

What in the world did you use for insulation, lead?
Could have used foam panels and only add about 2 lb to the whole door.
Reliece the emergincy pull cord when the door is all the way down.
You should be able to open and close the door with one hand and it should be able to stop 1/2 way up and stay there.
If not then the springs of coil spring need to be adjusted.
Danger!! If you do not know how to do this call the door company to come do it. Many people have been hurt do what seems like a simple job.

Read the instructions for the new opener -
There's usually, a way to adjust the closing force and/or the travel.

I put some open cell foam on the inside of the frame and attached to it, just like you would drywall, I added some soundboard. The idea was to try and deaden some of the sound going through that wall.

What does this have to do with the door? Sounds like something is not right. Even the 1/3 horse should have worked, unless it was undersized to begin with.

As for the springs, anyone with half a brain can adjust the springs, unless they are torsion, then you are best to pay a door company to do the work.

This. You should be able to open and close your door with one hand. If you can't, the problem doesn't have any thing to do with your opener. Your springs need to be adjusted.

Yeah, I definitely cannot open and close it with one hand. Its a two hand affair done very carefully. Not terribly safe. Ill look into getting the springs adjusted. Thanks!

If you have springs make sure there's a safety wire running through them with cable clamps on the ends.
One of them lets good and it's going to leave a mark on whatever it hits.
