Our carpenter just replaced the rotted wood strip from the bottom part. When we tried to close the door, the X metal slats from the ceiling that support the garage door opener got twisted up. he had done it once with success. This happened the second time it was tried. now we shifted to manual operation and the X has straightened up somewhat. I am wondering what to do with this? Is the wood too heavy? Thanks!

If he installed a wider (higher) bottom rail (board) on a wood door, the closing limit stop needs adjusting. Otherwise, the opener is still closing the door to the old setting which may rack the angle supports to the opener.
More details, please.

Thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply. It looks about the same width- besides, as soon as the garage door started closing, the ceiling supports got all pulled and tangled up. So we had to stop midway. Weight issues perhaps? I did notice the wood was pretty solid and asked him about it. How to go about fixing it? Can additional support help? Thanks again and I appreciate your input.

If you disconnect the opener from the door, does the door go up and down easily without requiring a lot of muscle? I am thinking if the carpenter replaced the bottom strip of wood, he probably released the tension on the springs and either rewound them, or if you had side extension springs, retensioned them. If not tensioned properly, the door could be heavy to lift and put a strain on the opener and mounting.
You described the opener mounts as an X-brace. If it is the thin metal stapping that comes with some of the inexpensive openers, I would replace it with the angle iron with the pre-punched holes that you typically see supporting the ends of the horizontal track. Mount a piece on the ceiling joists, along with two vertical drops to support the opener. Then add a third piece to form a triangle on one side between the ceiling piece and a verticle piece. That should solidify the opener mount. Also, make sure the ceiling joist(s) you attach to are properly supported. Some times a couple pieces of 2 x 4 bracing are needed to stiffen up the joist.

Garage door

Yeah, the door goes up and down smooth without the power- so its probably the side spring tension. Thanks so much!:yes:
