Garage Door Remotes

I was wondering if different brands of garage door opener remotes only work with their brands. I have a rental property that has a Marantec garage door opener, but I have an extra Chamberlain remote from my old house. I don't think any stores carry Marantec stuff, so I was wondering if there was a way I could pair a different brand remote with the opener.
