With garage doors openers, based on what I've seen there is chain, belt and screw drive systems. Seems that the screw drive would have the best durability, but I am curious to see what other's thoughts are.

Harley Davidsons run belts that last quite a long while and there is very good technology in these new units.

Plenty of things can go wrong with any system when it comes to the drive and it is probably more impactful to use an opener of good repute.

They all seem to work good.
Some are quieter then others.
But I don't care as long as it works good..

It sure beats the hell out of having to get in/out of the vehicle and lift/shut the door by hand.

My current garage door opener is quite loud, but is the opener that came with the house. Nothing fancy about this, but at least this works.

I know a person whose garage door stopped working so they have to manually open the garage door and shut this, but their choice I suppose.

I get a chuckle out of the opener ads that diss chain drive, because it goes "nuh-nuh-nuh". I have to wonder if they have ever ridden in a good old American V-8 vehicle that has a chain drive that links the crankshaft to the camshaft.

That said, what tends to fail in these things are plastic parts. It's SO much cheaper to buy a plastic injection-molded part than one machined from steel or brass, that they all tend to go cheap. Same for electric chain saws, paper shredders, etc.

I install openers. I put the belt drive at the top of my list. They are the quietest, and don't require any periodic adjustment. The chain drives would be next. If you want to save a few bucks on the opener, a good chain drive is fine. I have never installed a screw drive for a customer. Taken plenty of them down though. They do last, but are by far the noisiest and messiest of the openers. You have a steel screw spinning inside of an aluminum extrusion. They resonate the noise to the point your neighbor can hear you coming and going. Then you grease it to quiet it down and after of passes it rewards you by dropping a blog of grease on your car. I install Liftmasters pretty exclusively. Not happy with Genies since they revamped their line a few years ago.

Thanks for the various responses gentlemen. Especially from Firehawkmph, as I haven't had the opportunity to see where a installer stance is with this subject. Turns out this the Genie brand and this is at least for 40+ years old.

For me, in this particular scenario the noise level isn't that big of a deal, but to each their own.
