My garage door works half the time when I press and release the button. The other half of the time I have to hold down the button. This is true for both the wired and wireless remote buttons. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening?

Thanks in advance

Brand and model of the opener.
Pull down on the emergency rope and raise and lower the door. It should be able to be opened and closed with one hand and stop any place along the wall if it's adjusted right.
Any of the sencors blinking instead or glowing a steady red and green?

garage door

Saw this issue before, it is probably your sensors. There is one at each side of the door, if they are not alligned, you'll have the problem as you suggested. They may have been knocked or hit by mistake, ... play around with them and align them correctly.

When this happens it is usually caused by the sensor eyes. Could be an aiming issue but also can be caused by cobwebs, leaves or something stuck to the door that breaks the beam as the door closes. If you find this only happening at a certain time of day it can also be caused by the angle of the sun shining directly into one eye.

It also might be the door is actually catching and reversing; but only on occasion. In this case it may be just coincidence that holding the button works on the next try.

The solution

Thanks for all your help.

The problem I described went away for quite a while but it came back. I tried cleaning the sensor surfaces (eyes). It seems to be working so far.

Thanks again.
