Our cottage design plan 24 x 26 has a gable roof (6/12 roof pitch). Planning to add a deck 20 x 8 and want to have a cover over the deck. Is the most economical way to add a second small gable to the roof rather than an extending the roof? Are there any design guidelines that it should be gable style on a gable roof or are there other roof styles that complement the gable style? Thank you.

I think you're looking for these kinds of images? I searched for "roof over decks" and went to the images.
Depends on high winds or snow. Just a shade or plans to enclose. I wouldn't use corrugated plastic sheets - too much noise in rain. Low slope roof costs less but there is more roofing detail. I think the cost will be about the same and no standout economy.

Just my opinion.

I wouldn't do 20' x 8'

The 8' part doesn't leave much room for furniture like a table and chairs.

Most people keep it 10' and above, 20 x 10, 16 x 10, 12 x 10, etc..

Also by splitting the length of the tread boards can save you money.

Anything over 16' long is more expensive.

Thanks Carpdad. Definitely snow and strong winds. I saw in your pics and what I've seen online that there doesn't seem to be a standard approach to using a gable roof and then the overhead of the deck to be gable as well. I was considering gable and gable because of the snow. Again thanks for taking the time.

More info needed.
Which side will be the front, will the main gables be in the front and back or sides?
Will the deck be front back or one side?

NealT thanks for the message. It is in my picture in my album. It is a front gable facing the water and the deck is in the front as well.

Check your album it might not be set for public viewing. Just copy and paste the picture here
