I bought a house with a detached garage. It has a fuse box with two fuses that are 15 amps each. It powers the garage opener, one 110 outlet, and the lights. I need to add a 220 outlet and other outlets for power tools and the existing circuits won't handle them. Can I just buy a new larger breaker box and replace the fuse box so I can have more circuits? I know how to wire everything to meet codes and do not have to apply for a permit. I'm just unsure about the load coming in from the main wire. I'm not sure if it comes off the 200 amp box in the house. I will have to shut each one off to find out.

also, what has it cost you guys who added a main power line from the pole?

Going to need to know what size wire is feeding the panel, what size wire and how many conductors, and what it's connected to inside the house.
Most of the time I find someone thought they were only going to need a few outlets and a light. They end up like you needing more power and the whole thing needs to be redone.
