I'm hanging furring strips for my ceiling and they been in my room for about a 1 1/2 months. they are turning blacker everyday. what is happening to them, what should I do and can I still use them?

The wood was damp when you bought it---or stored it--that's just something some wood does.

The darkening should not affect the soundness of the wood---if it's dry go ahead and use it.--Mike--

The black stuff might be mold. Wet wood bundled together, stacked up on top of one another. You might want to check it out first.

what is an easy&quick way to test for mold?

The cheapest, quickest way to test for mold is on the front of your face. If it looks like mold and smells like mold....... it's probably mold. Sand it off outside and seal it. A lot of wood that is bundled and gets rained on developes a mild infestation of mold. Not anything to worry too much about. Keep in mind that some wood developes mineral streaks that are natural and are not mold. They don't sand off like mold.

looks kind of like some scrap wood that i have sitting on the slab in my old barn. is the wood sitting on a concrete slab? if so, has the slab or the wood gotten rained on, or otherwise damp?

Wood doesn't just turn black as part of the seasoning or aging process. I'd imagine it is some sort of mold. Furring strips are cheap. I'd get rid of them and get some new (dry) ones. Or even better, go with metal hat channel for the ceiling...It is better anyway.
