Does anybody know what my best choice of action would be for this problem. See photo. A pumpkin was sitting on top of mirrored tray and it rotted and dripped onto the finish. It happened some time ago.

The rest of the furniture is in good shape. It is the top of a buffet

Assuming it's a wood veneer about all you can do is sand lightly and use oxalic bleach. A table cloth or something to hide it might work best.

Actually, it is not veneer. It is either cherry or maple, but oxalic bleach is a possibility....

Begin sanding the complete surface and sand until that area looks like the remainder of the wood, especially when wet with mineral spirits or water. That may take awhile if hand sanding.

Start with the finish coating. Use the bottom of the table, if finished. The finish may be shellac, alcohol base. Alcohol fuel/thinner may be still in stock, because this can't be used safely on skin. If you have alcohol prep pads, will also work. Wipe a small area and see if the area gets sticky and the pad gets brownish.


Before you sand, could try stripping the finish with paint stripper. Wipe away the residue gently with plastic scraper. If this removes the stain then you can save the time aged patina. If not, then sand.
