Start with the finish coating. Use the bottom of the table, if finished. The finish may be shellac, alcohol base. Alcohol fuel/thinner may be still in stock, because this can't be used safely on skin. If you have alcohol prep pads, will also work. Wipe a small area and see if the area gets sticky and the pad gets brownish.


Before you sand, could try stripping the finish with paint stripper. Wipe away the residue gently with plastic scraper. If this removes the stain then you can save the time aged patina. If not, then sand.
