I am researching what is the best furnace filter for my homes needs. We run a heat pump in our 1122 square foot home, we have 2 adults and a baby with 2 small dogs.

We have been running just the basic filtrete 16x25x1 filters. We still have issues with excessive dust around the house.

What do you guys use/recommend, and pricing for buying in bulk?

Merv 7 or 8 pleated filter. 3M does not use Merv as they don't play nice or want you to know. Merv is the Industry standard. If you use a higher Merv 10+ then you need to check the temp rise in your furnace as the tighter filters, especially Filtrete's can overheat your furnace and freezeup your AC.

Somewhere on the net if you spend lots of time you can find a cross-reference chart from Filtrete rating to Merv.

I would get a reputable robotic duct cleaner to do the ducts in the Spring/Summer.

To fix dust problems you have to get at the source - use the filter just to keep the furnace clean. that's all it's good for.

3m stuff is expensive - stick with the basic pleats. tru-blu basic protection merv 7 filters are inexpensive and not restrictive to airflow - around $3 each in bulk here in canada, possibly less in the us.

When i had a Heat pump once checked out for airflow- with the thicker filter in it,it made a very dramatic change in flow, limiting suction.I changed it to a thinner basic fiberglass one and it didnt put the strain on flow near as bad.
I wont use any of the thick filters ever. Was just a matter of changing them monthly instead of every 3 mo but was well worth the care of the heat pump and a clearer filter for me.No issue with dust for mine.
