My furnce accepts a 4 or 5 inch thick filter. Should i use the thickest?

What was there to start with? Your choice how much dirt you want to catch. 4 " should do right or maybe a 4" with a 1" pre filter.

Do not use 2 filters, use 4 or 5" that fits snuggly.

Nothing wrong with a 1" pre filter if preferred. Have seen them zillions of times in all types of applications.

5" will fit the tightest and have less air/dirt leakage around the filter and is propbably better value per dollar and will last longer.

Why in the hell would you put a filter that lasts 1-2 months in front of a filter that last 6-12 months. What is that 1" filter going to catch that a 5" filter won't. All you are going to do is restrict airflow quicker.
