I have a furnace with an electronic air cleaner (see Figures). It never worked well, and I was advised years ago to replace the air cleaners with an air filter.

I have been using the filter size shown in the attached 28 1/4 x18 3/16 x 3 3/4. Not a perfect fit, but it seemed to work. I can't find this size any more. What are my options? Custom filters? Those are really expensive. Or should I cobble together a frame that would allow me to use a smaller filter size?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I thicker filter will fit there, why not standard 4" thick?

If it's not a perfect fit - small gap at top, can put rubber weather seal tape around it to stop air from leaking around.

I can't find a thicker filter that's close to 28'' x 18'', or a thinner filter close to those dimensions. That's the issue.

Boy.....Guess I'm confused with the issue....why not one of the washable filtyers where you just cut it and the plastic frame to fit.??????

Those are only 1" - the electrostatic style ones have a poor reputation and the basic hogs hair ones that don't use a frame are restrictive.

Media filter - 4 to 5" is best if one that can fit.

If you're handy with sheet metal, etc - the best option may be to install a standard media filter cabinet and be done with it.
