Im trying to plan out a front yard fence but I cant wrap my had around what im going to do about the gas line (in red). This layout makes the most sense if I were to ignore it. Is there any hope in trying to set a post above the gas line? I assume im just asking for trouble. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

Is that a concrete curb beside the sidewalk?

Even if you know where the pipe is, get a stake out.

Did you get Miss Utility to come out and mark everything.?

After they mark it they have three feet from the line for a mistake. Check to see how deep gas pipe is in your area. You may not have to worry if it's 5' or more deep.

Use a probe to gently stab down in the ground several inches at a time as to not puncture the line.
Lightly dig down several inches at a time where your post will go until you reach your 24"-28" depth.

If you find the pipe your post should be at least _" (find your areas specs) away from the pipe.

You want to take every precaution not to puncture the gas line. I have personally seen them explode from static electricity.

Here's one type of probe.

I'd be hesitant to use a probing rod thing. Up here they use plastic stuff for the lines.

If you call your gas company they should be able to tell you approx how deep they bury the line on properties.

NG doesn't freeze, so even up here in Alaska they only go 18-24 inches deep.

you can do a double gate instead just for the few times you might need to roll in a double door refrigerator or a pre-assembled furniture or whatever. That way the post will be set further to the left.

another option is to call the gas company. Last year I removed a tree near a gas line and I wanted to grind the stump down but I had no idea how deep the line was, I called the gas company and they told me it's about 6" deep only, which surprised me, but they offered to come out and relocate the line around the tree so I could grind the stump safely.
