Front yard debacle

So I knew that eventually I would have to tackle my front yard and the time is here. My front yard sits in a slight slope and the relavant area it's around 5'×5'. The rise is no higher than 2 1/2 feet. I wanted to know if anyone could help me with ideas of some sort of terrace retaining wall? I want at least two levels and have some kind of desert lanscape. I live in California and really hating grass! Any suggestions, layout plan, and general knowledge regarding this challenge will be truly appreciated! Thanks to all in advance!!!!!
