Framing in my porch for a 6-ft wide patio door. New construction. Haven't bought or ordered a door yet, but want to frame. Should king studs be spaced exactly 6-ft apart, or plus an inch, or maybe more.
Don't have to select door first, do I.

You should select the unit and either get the rough opening dimensions or get the unit dimension and add to square it up. Our code requires double jack studs for openings over 6’ in width.

We treat those as windows and frame to size and the door comes 1/2 smaller both ways but if you are going for a brand name you may want to check that.

Do you have a step down to the patio, if not I would set in on a 2x4 so you can do a door pan under it.

The door will be going from porch to outside, not house to porch.
Was planning to set it right on the concrete pad. Don't know what a "door pan" is.

Are you hoping to keep the porch dry, is there a step down to outside

- You need to get the door first and do the rough opening to fit this door. If it comes with instructions, follow them.
- You can't put the base of the door (sill) on the slab, you will have leaks. It should be elevated a bit, like in the video above.
- As mentioned above, you need to double the jack studs, on both sides.

Two doors will be installed, both leading from the porch to outside. One side has a slight step down, then other had a tiny step onto patio. I'll install sill pan as in the video (eventhough Norm didn't do one in his video).

Why on earth would I set a 2x4 under the jamb. Is that what you are referring to above.

This what a lot of people end up with. And is why I was asking about a step down.
