I'm trying to figure out how to frame a barn that has a small loft floor.
The barn will be approx 12 feet wide by 20 feet long, and 14 feet tall. It will look similar to this inside: http://i.imgur.com/yuueK.jpg (except not post and beam). outside view: http://i.imgur.com/Da5HV.jpg
I was planning to balloon frame it, as i have access to several lengths and widths of studs, but no beams.
If the loft took up the entire floor, it would be easy. i would just frame 10 foot walls, then build a full floor on top of that and then frame 4 foot walls and my gables walls. however, i only wanted a small loft and leave the rest open. my main problem right now is raising two 14 foot walls when i only have a 12 foot floor to build it on. adding jack studs to support the beam which supports the loft floor is simple enough.
Does anybody have any sketches for framing such a barn? Any suggestions how i should go about doing this or alternative methods that will yield the same look?
