So am working on a new habitat build, first floor is basically 24' long bye 14" high I joists, manufactured 1 1/8" rim board, also 14" high. So I have the kids tooling along setting the joists and then get a couple putting on the rim....and find that the 14" height nicely stamped on everything appears go be more of a suggestion. Rim board 14 1/8 at one end, 13 7/8" at the other. J0ists at 14 3/16, 13 13/16" and 14 even. Doesn't sound like much but if a small joist ends up sandwiched between big ones, that is 3/8" drop at that point. Did this same thing two years ago land everything was basically perfect. Change in standards? Bad choice in lumber company?? a pro wouldn't even worry about it? Combination? P
Us not even a plan for the trusses, creating openings appropriately, etc.....which I've always gotten before.

I've never see variances like that with I joist before but I stopped framing over 10 years ago.

You mentioned a Habitat build, sounds like donated rejects.

A pro most certainly would worry about it then do something about it.

I would measure each and find the highest one and use that as my high point. Then shim all the rest so that they are all dead nut level. Provided this is all I have to work with.

Andy.
