I live in a house constructed in the 1930s, there's some 8 inch tile in the closet (which I understand may be asbestos), it's glued down with some black adhesive (I think it's called cut out?). Is there any significant chance the adhesive contains asbestos?

Yes....Very likely...(it's also called cut-back).

Don't know your project, but maybe you can just cover it.

I'm 99.99% sure it does contain asbestos.
I 100% agree, once covered it poses no risk!
Once someone starts trying to remove it, then it becomes a risk.
