Planning my deck build for next month. We are interested in expanding the deck out longer than the current ledger board (see photo). What would you recommend I do in this scenario? Can I just use the current ledger board and place one pier right next to the house near the back wall?

I do not have plans to cut into any of the new siding.

Thanks!

If the house is new, the footings for the post near the house will have to be down to undisturbed soil even if that is deeper than frost depth.

House is new, basement is not finished. I have access.
You should have an engineer in this one.

You will be starting with a beam to hang the beam out to the corner.

I would want that first beam to be about 6" from the end of the ledger so you can have a lag bolt on both sides of the hanger and then a couble joist hold backs would be a good idea.

If you don't want to cut into the siding you would have to do a full floating deck. I would think you have to abandon (properly) the existing ledger since I doubt a permit issuer would approve a deck that is half-and-half.

Not directly related to the OP, but it begs a question that has always piqued me. If you intend to build a floating deck in an area with frost depth and perimeter drainage, how do you sink posts near the house without damaging/interfering with the drains? Do you have to set them out then cantilever the deck frame back towards the house? Asking for a friend. :biggrin2:

The OP is planning to do one beside the house.
I have only done it once and we found a piece of green 7" pvc sewer pipe that we cut up and set it over the drain so it wouldn't crush too bad and just built the forms over and around it.

We also talked about just putting a couple anchor bolts into the foundation and set the tub on the footing.

We like to give engineer choices, left on their own they will have you doing some crazy stuff.

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with the one on the left, and the one on the right doesn't look floating to me, just another type fixed without using a ledger board.

Floating doesn't need a footing as such , it is allowed to move.
This one can't float as part of it will be attached to the house.
