This has me puzzled. My inlaws are buying a house and paid a home inspector to look it over before closing. He red tagged the 40 gal gas water heater with a note that said, "water heater has corrugated flexible gas line. Line should be solid pipe." This is the flex line from the shutoff to the t-stat, 12"-18" long. What gives? Every gas heater I've ever seen has these. It won't be a deal breaker for the inlaws, but we were all puzzled anyway.

I've seen them to, all depends on the local code governing your area. Around here, upstate NY, has to be gas pipe with 6 inch dirt leg going to wh - no flex lines. Gas stoves/oven here can have the flex line though.

Just call your local municipality and ask them for clarification. All municipalities have a building inspector. They would know for sure if it's allowed or not. Just a suggestion.

Around here any gas appliance needs a flex line connection.
And where not even in an earthquake area.
